Type Locality and Naming

Junggar Basin. The type section is Huo’erguosi River section, Shawan County, Xinjiang. It was named by Compilation Team of the Regional Stratigraphic Table of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1981.


Lithology and Thickness

A brown rock series composed of brownish red mudstone, sandy mudstone and sandstone, nodular limestone and grayish green sandstone and conglomerate, without fossils. The thickness is 359.5 m. The thickness is ~150–500 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base is grayish green conglomerate and pebbly sandstone, which may have a disconformable contact with the underlying Eocene Anjihaihe Fm.

Upper contact

The top is green and grayish green mudstone and sandstone, which may have a conformable contact with the overlying Neogene Taxihe Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed along a line from the Jichang River to Tositai and best developed in the area from the Manasi River to Anjihai. It is located on the southern margin of the Junggar Basin.

Fossils

Ostracods: Limnocythere, Ilyocypris ,Cyprinotus and gastropods; Mammals: Dzungariotherium and Lophiomeryx.


Age 

Some people think that its age is Oligocene–Miocene (Li Yuntong et al, 1984), while others consider that the age is Oligocene (Zhong Xiaochun et al., 1992).
